It's official - Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' has taken the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The track is a hybrid of trap and country which definitely shouldn't work but does, and gives Lil Nas X his first top 10 single.
The success comes after Billboard removed the record from their Country Music charts, stating that the category-specific charts are "a tool for people in the music business to better gauge the success of songs relative to others in a given format." This perceived injustice only boosted the song's popularity.
"I'm always going to be experimenting musically, trying new things," Lil Nas X said in an interview. "I tried to make sure everything sounds different, so you hear no two songs and think they sound alike."
The triumph of this track is expected to be followed by the remix that features Billy Ray Cyrus - this one is eligible for Billboard contention next week. What can we say, where there's a meme, there's a way.
