Musicians Protest Against Trump

Musicians Protest Against Trump

After '30 Days, 30 Songs', a programme that released anti-Trump songs in the lead-up to the election, we have seen the start of 'Our First 100 Days', a subscription compilation that releases one new song each day for the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Through this and other new music releases, it is quickly becoming apparent that members of the music community are banding together to protest against President Trump through their music.

'Our First 100 Days' includes new music from Angel Olsen, How To Dress Well, Toro Y Moi, The Range and many more artists with all profits raised going directly to organisations working on the front lines of climate, women's rights, immigration and fairness.

Many celebrities publicly distanced themselves from President Trump leading up to his inauguration by rejecting offers to perform including Jennifer Holliday, Andrea Bocelli Celine Dion, KISS, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Ice T, Beyonce, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

On the day of the inauguration, other musicians expressed their anti-Trump opinions by releasing new tracks.

Gorrilaz dropped their first new track in six years on inauguration day titled 'Hallelujah Money' featuring Benjamin Clementine.

Arcade Fire also made a return with their release 'I Give You Power' saying in a tweet "it's never been more important we stick together".  Featuring Mavis Staples, all proceeds from the track will go to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Another Canadian band, Austra are releasing their third album, 'Future Politics' saying:
"Two years ago, I started writing 'Future Politics' in response to what I saw as a fast approaching dystopia.
"I meant it as a call to imagine something different, a better future. At the time, Donald Trump was not even on the radar - now here we are, confronted with his election and the impending dystopia is suddenly a reality.
"Our long planned release date now has the horrible significance of also being the day he takes office.
"This record is our commitment to envisioning something different as humans, something outside of the current systems of say what you want, take what you want, and give nothing back."
All proceeds from 'Future Politics' go towards Planned Parenthood.

Green Day have joined the bandwagon and released a new animated video for their single 'Troubled Times' that demonstrates their feeling towards President Trump.

Moby And The Void Pacific Choir have also unveiled a new video for their track 'Erupt and Matter' the day before the inauguration.

Though we may feel like there are dark times ahead, at least one good thing has come of this; new music from some of our favourite artists. Hopefully we will continue to see the current American political landscape inspire and fuel new art as we watch musicians and artists from all around the world revolt.
