Trump's Immigration Ban Impacting NBA

Trump's Immigration Ban Impacting NBA

The NBA have thrown their support behind Milwaukee Bucks rookie Thon Maker and Los Angeles Lakers veteran Luol Deng amid concerns they may be affected by Trump's recent immigration ban.

President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders on Friday in order to cut down immigration from predominantly-Muslim countries. The result bans travel from seven majority Muslim countries including Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen for 90 days. It also suspends all refugee admissions for 120 days and suspends entry of Syrian refugees indefinitely.
Soon after the ban was announced, the NBA contacted the US government to find out how the immigration ban may potentially affect its players.

A federal judge in New York has since issued a ruling to suspend Trump's order to ban. Before this, NBA spokesman, Mike Bass, issued a statement saying: “we have reached out to the State Department and are in the process of gathering information to understand how this executive order would apply to players in our league who are from one of the impacted countries.
“The NBA is a global league and we are proud to attract the very best players from around the world.”

The 90-day ban could affect any plans players may have to travel overseas if it is officially implemented. Despite the order being blocked by the federal judge on a temporary stay, this is expected to be a long legal battle.
